Matthias Hamann (art historian)

Matthias Hamann (born December 9, 1967 in Ochsenfurt ) is a German art historian and cultural manager. Since 2007 he has been the director of the Museum Service of the City of Cologne .

Life

Matthias Hamann studied art history , archeology and German studies at the universities of Würzburg and Bologna from 1989 to 1994 . After research stays in Paris and Burgundy as well as activities in museums and private companies, he received his doctorate in 1998 with a thesis entitled The Burgundian Priory Church of Anzy-le-Duc and the Romanesque sculpture in the Brionnais at the University of Würzburg.

After receiving his doctorate, Hamann worked as a freelance cultural manager and in the art trade before moving to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg in 1999 , where he was involved in the 2001/2002 exhibition, Artists' Colonies in Europe and the associated exhibition publication.

From 2003 to 2006 Hamann was head of the Marketing and Communication department and personal advisor to the General Director at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. In 2006, together with Thomas Brehm, he curated the exhibition “Was ist deutsch?” As a cultural contribution to the FIFA World Cup in Germany .

Since April 2007 Hamann has been director of the Cologne Museum Service , the central institution for museum education, educational and mediation work in the nine city museums. In addition, he has been a lecturer at the University of Cologne , at the Ruhr University Bochum and at the CIAM (Center for International Arts Management) in Cologne since 2008 . He is second chairman of the Federal Association of Museum Education and (2016) a member of the specialist committee for socioculture and cultural education within the German Cultural Council .
