Matthias Joachim Maaß (born November 3, 1958 in Heidelberg ; † May 18, 2019 in Heidelberg ) was a German draftsman and painter .

Life

Matthias Joachim Maaß was a son of the mathematician Hans Maaß . After graduating from high school in 1977 at the Bunsengymnasium in Heidelberg, Matthias Maaß first studied Arabic and philosophy at the Free University in Berlin from 1977 . Since 1979 he has had a friendship with Otfried Rautenbach, with whom he has had numerous joint productions. Matthias Maaß began to draw and paint professionally in the 1980s. He himself dates the beginning of his artistic work in a work The 6th Anniversary of August 8, 1981. - Six years of drawings by Matthias Maaß. on August 8, 1981; his last work was probably created on May 12, 2019 ( in the flash , colored ink drawing in A4 format, private property). He has kept a diary since a trip to Switzerland from 1983.

In 1985 he received the first prize from the artist group 79 eV, Heidelberg. From 1982 to 2018 Matthias Maaß lived in his parents' house in Ziegelhausen , most recently in a condominium in Ziegelhausen after his mother's death.

Working method and work

In addition to expressive, mostly small-format portraits drawn with ink and watercolors, Matthias Maaß created serial works such as the “28,000 victims of the Vendée uprising in 1793 in the French Revolution” or the “43,800 fascists in Germany”. “I mostly paint pictures as personal memories. Much of my work was created on paper because I mostly stick to a common format. In the course of the last six years, however, 5 canvas pictures were created out of the need to paint a larger area than the 70x100cm format. These works mostly got a title. When, however, the work of January 12th, 1990 was finished late in the evening, I couldn't think of anything but African art, Steppenwolf or later Mr. Schomaker and I enter the pint under the face of death . - So it remained untitled. (The place of origin was the roof studio at Kl. Mantelgasse 21 in Heidelberg, which my friend Harro Lauter lived in at the time. It had to give way to renovation in May 1990.)

I myself live in my parents' house in Ziegelhausen. I have been granted the privilege to spend my time in an 18 square meter room, where many visitors have already been. Sometimes acquaintances or friends come to me who want to see each other in my work. I've had a thick pile of paper since 1981. I am then also happy to part with a few things, a little cheaper for the price, of course. So I usually live into the day, starting the day with reading, around noon I usually start drawing, sometimes until late at night or at an early hour when I haven't found sleep. It is usually a series of images that emerge. Individual works of exquisite beauty (RR Müller) are only created on very eventful and sometimes emotionally charged days. "
