Ernst-Julius Gehben (* 1844 in Altenbruch ; † January 4, 1916 in Altenbruch) was a German-American merchant and farmer .

biography

The son of a kätner (small farmer) was gone . In 1859, at the age of 15, he emigrated to the United States of America . He was able to achieve considerable wealth through his efforts. In 1904 he visited his hometown and married the daughter of the local farmer Wahlen. For them he bought a large farm from the mayor of a city in the US state of New Jersey . But his wife was very homesick. So he commissioned the Ritzebüttel architect Achmet Steinmetz from America to build the prestigious Gehben villa . Misunderstandings about the American and German units of measurement meant that the villa was larger than the client actually wanted. The couple moved into the villa around 1908. In 1908 he donated two glass windows in the choir of St. Nicolai Church . Gehben was buried in his round, listed mausoleum in the Altenbruch cemetery in 1916 .
