Villa going

The villa Gehben in Cuxhaven - Altenbruch , Alter Weg 18, opposite the St. Nicolai Church , was the town hall of the district from 1958 to 1972 and is under Lower Saxony monument protection and is included in the list of architectural monuments of the outskirts of the city of Cuxhaven .

history

Altenbruch was first mentioned in 1280. The district had 2588 inhabitants shortly after the villa was built in 1910 and today (2018) 3760 inhabitants.

The two-storey representative historicizing plastered villa from 1908 with a hipped roof , the formative middle gable risalit with its tail gable , as well as the side 3-tiered. The turrets, the bay windows and loggias were built with Art Nouveau elements according to plans by Achmet Steinmetz for the farmer Ernst-Julius Gehben (1844–1916) who lived in the USA . Gehben, who was born in Altenbruch, wanted a much smaller house as a retirement home. The reason that the house was getting bigger was said to have been a misunderstanding about the units of measurement between the American client and the German architect. The installation of the stained glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany from the USA turned out to be difficult because of the differences in length.

The villa was sold in 1958 by the heirs to the Altenbruch community, which used it as a town hall. After the incorporation of Altenbruch (1972), Cuxhaven extensively renovated the house and restored its original appearance.
After 1972 the villa became a meeting place and cultural center, used by the tourist office, administrative offices, the Altenbruch local council and for weddings. The Bürgerpark is located behind the villa.

The architect Achmet Steinmetz (1878–1947) planned in Cuxhaven a. a. also the Groden school , the residential and commercial building Nordersteinstraße , the single-family house Papenstraße 145 and his house Wißmannstraße 8.
