Matthias Kopp

Matthias Kopp (born April 10, 1968 in Velbert ) is a German theologian , archaeologist and publicist . Since 2009 he has been the press spokesman for the German Bishops' Conference .

Life

Matthias Kopp studied theology and Christian archeology in Bonn , Freiburg and Rome . In 1993 he obtained his diploma in Catholic theology from the University of Bonn , and in 1995 his licentiate in Christian archeology from the Pontifical Institute for Christian Archeology in Rome. From 1993 to 1997 he worked as a volunteer and editor for Vatican Radio in Rome. In 1997 he moved to the Central Media Office of the German Bishops' Conference as a consultant for press and publishing and was also the managing director of the Catholic Children's and Young People's Book Prize. In 2003 he took over the communication management of the World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne and was press spokesman for the World Youth Day. From 2006 to 2008 Matthias Kopp was spokesman for the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia and spokesman for the Minister for Federal and European Affairs in Düsseldorf.

In 2009 he was elected press spokesman and head of press / public relations for the German Bishops' Conference and was confirmed in office in 2014 and 2020.

He is the editor and author of numerous books and publications. From 1999 to 2011, Kopp was a board member of the Society of Catholic Publicists in Germany (GKP), its deputy chairman since 2001; from 2001 to 2008 he represented the GKP in the Central Committee of German Catholics and until 2006 in the World Association of Catholic Press. From 2001 to 2006 he was editor of the youth magazine x-mag and from 2002 to 2004 editor of the scientific media magazine Communicatio Socialis . In 2003 Matthias Kopp was awarded the 27th Capo Circeo Prize for German-Italian friendship in Rome and in 2016 with the Franz-von-Sales-Tafel of the Society of Catholic Publicists (GKP).
