Matthias Carpenter

Matthias Martin Tischler (born March 18, 1968 in Münchberg ) is a German historian in the field of medieval history .

Life

He studied classical philology , Medieval Latin , Medieval and Modern History, Applied Historical Sciences and Romance Philology at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich (1989-1995). After receiving his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1998 with Walter Berschin , he was a post-graduate fellow at the German Historical Institute in Paris (1998–1999) and at the University of Bamberg (1999–2001) as well as a research assistant and lecturer at the Hugo von Sankt Viktor Institute in Frankfurt and at the University of Frankfurt (2001–2009). He then studied philosophy and theology (2001–2009) with Rainer Berndt and Islam and Christian-Muslim encounters (2003–2005) with Christian Troll . After completing his habilitation in Dresden in 2009 with Gert Melville , he was senior assistant professor for medieval and transcultural history at the University of Dresden until 2012. In the 2013/14 academic year he was research professor for transcultural medieval history at the Institut d'Estudis Medievals (IEM) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona . In the 2014/2015 academic year he was visiting professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris. In the 2015/2016 academic year he was a visiting fellow at the Medieval Institute of the University of Notre Dame and in spring 2019 he was a short-term visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Since 2017 he has been Senior Research Professor at the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA) in Barcelona .
