Rainer Berndt

Rainer Berndt SJ (born July 28, 1951 in Düsseldorf ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and church historian .

Life

Berndt studied philosophy and theology in Bonn and Freiburg from 1970 to 1973 and in Frankfurt from 1977 to 1980 . The doctoral program (1981-1989) in Medieval Studies (History, Medieval Latin , Edition Wissenschaft ) in Louvain-la-Neuve and Paris he joined in June 1989 with the promotion of Dr. theol. at the University of Paris IV -Sorbonne / Institut Catholique .

After his habilitation in February 1992 at the PTH Sankt Georgen for the subject of the history of philosophy and theology in the Middle Ages, he was professor for the history of philosophy and theology of the Middle Ages at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main since July 1992 . In 2006 his professorship was expanded to include the subject of medieval church history. At the end of the summer semester 2019 he retired. Since 1991 he has held a permanent visiting professorship for philosophy and church history of the Middle Ages at the Center Sèvres . Since 1991 he has been director of the Hugo von Sankt Viktor Institute for Medieval Source Studies at Sankt Georgen University.

His fields of work are the history of the Abbey of St-Victor (Paris) and of Victorian authors, the history of Latin exegesis in the Middle Ages, the history of orders, especially of the Augustinian family, the history of philosophy and theology of the Middle Ages, the history of churches in the Middle Ages and the early modern period, and editorial studies, and auxiliary historical sciences .
