Christian Troll

Christian Wilhelm Troll SJ (born December 25, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German theologian , Islamic scholar and Jesuit priest . He is a son of the geographer Carl Troll .

Life

After studying philosophy and theology in Tübingen and Bonn (1957–1961), he studied Arabic at the University of Saint-Joseph in Beirut (1961–1963). After joining the Jesuit order and the basic training of the Jesuits, he studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University from 1966 , where he earned a BA Honors in Urdu literature in 1970 and a Ph. D. in 1975 with a thesis on modern Islam Thinking in South Asia. At the same time, he learned about Islamic thought and life in India , Iran and Pakistan through study visits to Southeast Asia .

From 1976 to 1988 he was Professor of Islamic Studies at the Vidyajyoti Institute of Religious Studies in New Delhi , then until 1993 Senior Lecturer at the Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at the University of Birmingham and thereafter until 1999 Professor of Islamic Studies Institutions at the Pontifical Oriental Institute . He also gave regular lectures at the Theological Faculty of Ankara University . Since the end of 1999 he was head of the Christian-Islamic forum of the Catholic Academy in Berlin. In 2001 the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main appointed him honorary professor. He retired in 2007.

Until 2005, Troll was a member of the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims , which is part of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID), for twelve years . He is considered a distinguished expert on Islam. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him in 2008 as one of the scientists who - following the invitation of the 138 Islamic scholars - work on the Catholic-Islamic Forum. Troll is also a member of the sub-commission of the German Bishops' Conference for Interreligious Dialogue and advisor to the episcopal office CIBEDO ; as well as honorary member of the Christian-Islamic Society .
