Matthias Pöhlmann

Matthias Pöhlmann (* 1963 in Hof / Saale) is a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and religious journalist. He lives in Munich .

Career

After graduating from high school in Bamberg in 1983, Pöhlmann studied Protestant theology in Erlangen , Heidelberg and Munich from 1983 to 1989 . He completed his teaching vicariate from 1990 to 1992 in Baiersdorf / Middle Franconia. Pöhlmann then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Practical Theology of the Theological Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, initially from 1992 to 1994 at the Christian Journalism Department, from 1994 to 1999 at the Chair for Mission and Religious Studies and Ecumenical Theology. The doctorate in practical theology with the grade “summa cum laude” took place in 1997 with the thesis journalistic apologetics. The discussion of the Apologetic Central with religious and ideological movements in the Weimar Republic and in the “Third Reich” . From 1999 to 2011 the theologian worked as a research assistant at the Evangelical Central Office for Weltanschauungsfragen (EZW) in Berlin, where he headed the Esoteric , Occult , Spiritism and Satanism Department . From 2007 onwards he was deputy head of the institute and editor-in-chief of the monthly "Materialdienst der EZW - Zeitschrift für Religions- und Weltanschauung". In 2010 and 2011, Pöhlmann was a lecturer for missiology and religious studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin and for denominational studies at the University of Leipzig . After three years as a parish priest at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church in Germering , the regional church council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria appointed him as the regional church commissioner for sect and ideology issues, based in Munich.

Since 2011 Pöhlmann has been chairman of the “Religious Communities” committee of the church leadership of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD), which in autumn 2015 published the “Handbook of World Views, Religious Communities, Free Churches”.

In May 2015 he was elected chairman of the conference of the regional church commissioners for sectarian and ideological issues in the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

Since 2015 he and a team have been holding the annual conference series “Weltanschauungen im Dialog” in the Wildbad Rothenburg in autumn .
