Matthias Strebinger (born January 17, 1807 in Baden (Lower Austria) , † December 12, 1874 in Vienna ) was an Austrian violinist and composer. His music is hardly known today.

Life

Strebinger was born in the cadastral community Weikersdorf , today a district of Baden near Vienna in Lower Austria. He initially received violin and singing lessons in his hometown of Baden, and later in Vienna, where he played in a theater orchestra. At the age of 12 he appeared for the first time as a soloist in a concert in Pressburg. From 1820 he received thorough violin training from Georg Hellmesberger . In 1822 he was engaged as a violinist in the Burgtheater orchestra. In addition, he took composition lessons from the conductor Joseph Drechsler . In 1843 he took up a position in the court orchestra and worked as a ballet music répétiteur and ballet music director of the court opera theater. Strebinger died in Vienna at the age of 67.

Strebinger composed 22 ballets and divertissements, including "Juliska", "Carnevals-Abenteuer in Paris", "Les Grâces". However, how much of the ballet music is only arranged from existing ballet music and what can be regarded as independent new compositions requires further investigation. He also wrote various compositions for violin, a string quartet, church compositions with a concert violin as well as piano pieces and dances. Numerous sheet music on Strebinger's works can be found in the music collection of the Austrian National Library in Vienna. A list of works can be found in the entry on Strebinger near Wurzbach.
