The Mattsee (also Niedertrumer Lake ) is one of three to Salzburg's Lake District belonging Trumer Lakes in the Flachgau in the Province of Salzburg in Austria .
Naming
The name Mattsee was taken from the name for the Mattig river . The further origin of this name is not clear. It should go back to a Celtic or even older name. The name of the lake has been transferred to a human settlement, the place Mattsee .
Mattsee originally referred to both parts of the lake, which are only separated from each other by a narrow headland, including the one that is now called Obertrumer See and is considered an independent lake.
As alternatives to Mattsee, there are also variants with Unter- and Nieder- from the last centuries : Undersee (1562), Untersee (1770), Nieder-Trummer See (1806). Lower lake was also used by local fishermen , which in turn can be used as an alternative to Unter- or as a cut from Niedertrumer . The latter name is still used occasionally today and refers to the village of Niedertrum (municipality of Lochen am See ) on the other side of the state border in Upper Austria . The Upper and Lower or Lower refers to the general direction of flow of the waters in the area and has nothing to do with the altitude of the villages of Obertrum and Niedertrum. sport and freetime
The Mattsee can be used as bathing water. There are bathing beaches in Mattsee on the south bank and in Gebertsham on the north bank.
Surfing and sailing is possible at Mattsee. Driving with motor boats is not allowed on all three Trumer Lakes due to nature conservation. However, electric boats can be rented. An excursion boat operates on the Mattsee and - connected to a short waterway - on the Obertrumer See in the summer months.
Geological changes
Especially in the Weyerbucht not far from the center of Mattsee, the lake is increasingly silting up due to sand deposits, which makes it difficult for boats to enter. In April 2016 it was therefore decided to monitor the changes at 100 measuring points near the lake shore in order to develop a concept for suction dredging and moving the material to deeper parts of the lake.
On land in Weyerbucht, the ground level has dropped by 2 centimeters in the last 2 years (as of April 2016), so that the risk of flooding increased here.
