Maurice JE Brown
Maurice John Edwin Brown (born August 3, 1906 in London , † August 27, 1975 in Marlborough , Wiltshire ) was a British musicologist.
Life
Brown studied physics and music at the University of London from 1927 to 1929 . 1945 to 1966 he was the science faculty of the Marlborough Royal Free Grammar School , a high school in Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire .
He made a name for himself in particular with his work on Franz Schubert , which appeared in several editions, some also in German translations. His book Schubert: A Critical Biography (1958) was a standard work of Schubert research for many years. Also worth mentioning is his list of the works of Frédéric Chopin . Towards the end of his life he suffered from various illnesses that affected his research. He died of a heart attack . A planned book about Schubert's operas remained unfinished.
Brown's extensive estate includes a. 750 letters from the Schubert researcher Otto Erich Deutsch , with whom he was close friends. It is located in the Schubert Institute Research Center (SIRC) at the University of Leeds .
