Maurice Peston, Baron Peston

Maurice Harry Peston, Baron Peston (born March 19, 1931 in London - † April 23, 2016 ) was a British economist , university professor and Labor Party politician who was a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1987 .

Life

After attending Hackney Downs School, Peston completed a degree in mathematics and economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Princeton University and then took up an academic teaching position. Among his professors was Claus Adolf Moser . Most recently, he took a professorship of economics at Queen Mary College of the University of London true and taught there until his retirement . In addition to his teaching activities, he has written numerous economics books dealing with topics such as macroeconomics , game theory and public goods .

In addition, he was from 1967 to 1973 member of the Council for National Academic prices ( Council for National Academic Awards ) and 1976-1979 Chairman of the Economic Council of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). He was also an advisor to numerous Labor Party governments.

Peston was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated March 24, 1987 as a Life Peer with the title Baron Peston, of Mile End in Greater London . Shortly thereafter, on March 25, 1987, he was introduced ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belonged to the Labor Party faction .

During his longstanding membership in the House of Lords between 1987 and 1997, he was both the opposition spokesman for energy and for education and science. In addition, he was from 1990 to 1992 spokesman for the opposition Labor Group for the Treasury ( Treasury ) and then between 1992 and 1997, commercial and industrial. In 2001 he was temporarily chairman of the House of Lords Committee on Economic Affairs.
