Maurice Solovine
Maurice Solovine (born May 21, 1875 in Curorani , Romania ; died February 13, 1958 in Paris ) was a Romanian-French philosopher and translator .
Life
Maurice Solovine came from Romania, but little is known about his life at this time. In 1900 he came to Bern to study philosophy . Albert Einstein , who started his first job at the Swiss Patent Office there in 1902 , looked for tutoring students in a classified ad that Solovine responded to. Instead of class, it became the first of many philosophical conversations, and a friendship grew out of it, Einstein called him Solo . The two also invited the math student Conrad Habicht to their regular meetings . Solovine and Habicht became witnesses to Einstein's marriage in 1903 . They jokingly called their evening get-togethers our Academy ; it went down in history as the Olympia Academy . At times, Einstein's colleague Michele Besso also joined the group, and Einstein's fellow student Marcel Grossmann in Zurich was a corresponding member . They read works by Pearson , Mach , Poincaré , Mill , Hume , but also fiction such as Don Quixote . After completing his doctorate in 1904, Habicht got a job as a teacher in Schiers and was replaced in the Bernese district by his brother Paul Habicht. From November 1905, Solovine continued his studies in Lyon . He then moved to Paris, where between 1908 and 1919 he contributed to the publication of the Revue philosophique . Einstein met him in Paris in March 1913, when he was invited to Paris for the annual meeting of the Société française de physique . They first met in 1922 after the First World War. Solovine had already translated Einstein's 1921 Princeton lectures into French, but they had not yet appeared in print. Einstein gave his lectures in French at the Collège de France , which was not easy for him. At Einstein's request, they took Paul Langevin and Charles Nordmann on a private drive to the war graves of the World War.
In Paris, Solovine worked as a freelance translator and editor of classical texts from the history of European philosophy and contemporary mathematicians. He had a lifelong correspondence with Einstein and gradually translated his writings into French. When Habicht and Solovine met in Paris in 1953 and Einstein sent a postcard to Princeton, Einstein responded with a humorous eulogy to the Olympia Academy. He edited Einstein's letters to him after his death in 1956. He also translated articles on the theory of relativity by Hans Thirring and Moritz Schlick .
