Maurizio Seracini (* 1946 ) is an Italian engineer and measurement technician . His specialty is the examination of works of art , especially paintings , using the most modern technologies from medical and military technology . He caused a stir with the claim that Leonardo da Vinci's lost original painting of the Battle of Anghiari is still behind the wall of a Vasari fresco in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

biography

Maurizio Seracini studied engineering (Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences) at the University of California, San Diego until 1973 and then in a second degree in electrical engineering until 1976 in Padua. In 1977 he founded "Editech", the first Italian laboratory for the analysis of cultural objects using opto-electronic and other measuring devices. With the help of infrared reflectography, he has now examined over 2500 works of art.

Seracini has worked as a visiting professor a. a. taught at the University of Reggio Calabria and the University of Venice . He is the director of the Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archeology at the University of California, San Diego .

Since 1975, Seracini has been trying to prove the existence of Leonardo's painting of the Battle of Anghiari in the Palazzo Vecchio with increasingly better measuring instruments in what is now the third exploration . Among the many indications that have meanwhile been found, Seracini interprets Vasari's writing “Cerca trova” (whoever seeks, finds) on a green Florentine flag, which is not visible to the naked eye from below, as a reference to the “hidden painting”. The sought-after painting detail of Leonardo's about the Anghiari battle is also about a flag that is to be conquered. It became famous during the Renaissance as the first painting to capture the movement as such in a successful way. In October 2010 Matteo Renzi ( DP ), the newly elected mayor of Florence, gave him permission for further investigation. The provisional date for announcing his research was October 2011. The drilling, which was controversially discussed among experts, was stopped in September 2012 after several unsuccessful attempts.
