The mausoleum of the Attilians in Sádaba , a municipality in the province of Zaragoza in the Autonomous Region of Aragon ( Spain ), is a Roman mausoleum from the 1st century AD. The grave monument is a protected architectural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

location

The mausoleum was located on the formerly heavily frequented Roman highway from Tarragona to Pamplona and is representative architecture.

description

The Attilian mausoleum from the early imperial era is part of a burial precinct . It has a row of five arched niches above a base zone, which is structured by a cranked pilaster architecture with a gable end. A kyma forms the upper end. This front is adorned with garlands and emblems. The 9.20 meter long and 4.72 meter high mausoleum is made of regional sandstone . A five-pointed flower decoration has been preserved in the two outer niches. A Medusa can be seen in the central niche and an eagle and a taenia-attached pickaxe in the adjoining niches .

In the entablature zone of the main niches there are three Latin inscriptions:

C (aio) Atilio L (uci) f (ilio) Quirina Geniali
Atilia Festa avo
L (ucio) Atilio C (ai) f (ilio) Quirina Festo
Atilia Festa patri optimo
Atilia L (uci) f (ilia) Festa et sibi
se viva fecit

Translation: "For Gaius Atilius Genialis, son of Lucius, from the tribe of Quirina, her grandfather, (had this tomb built) Atilia Festa."

"For Lucius Atilius Festus, son of Gaius, from the Quirina tribe, her best father, (had this grave built) Atilia Festa."

"Atilia Festa, daughter of Lucius, (had this grave built) for herself during her lifetime."
