Mausoleum of the Albanian royal family

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mausoleum of the Albanian royal family ( Albanian  Mauzoleu i familjes mbretërore ) is a building in the Albanian capital Tirana that contains the remains of King Zog I and other family members. It stands on the southern outskirts of the city on the site of the Pallati i Brigadave , the former royal palace that was never completed as such.

An original building was erected on a hill south of the city as a tomb for Sadije Toptani , the king's mother who died in 1934. The mausoleum was designed by the architect Qemal Butka and inaugurated on December 30, 1935 with the transfer of the dead. The building was destroyed by communist soldiers on November 17, 1944 . The pictures show a square stone building that is taller than it is wide and is surmounted by a dome. There are niche-shaped bulges on the long sides.

In 2012, the Albanian Parliament decided to build a replica at the same location, which was inaugurated on November 17, 2012 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Albania's independence . The building houses the remains of King Zogu (1895–1961), who were exhumed and transferred to the cemetery of Thiais  near Paris 51 years after his death , as well as other members of the royal family : besides the Queen Mother Sadije (1876–1934) also Zogus Ms. Geraldine von Apponyi (1915-2002), his son Leka (1939-2011) and Leka's wife Susan Cullen-Ward (1941-2004). A lot of marble was used for the new building under the direction of the Institute for Cultural Monuments and costs of almost 21 million Lek (approx. € 148,000) are budgeted.

The funeral, which was carried out as a state act, was attended by many other Bujar Nishani and Atifete Jahjaga , the presidents of Albania and Kosovo, the Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha , Leka Anwar Zogu Reza and his fiancée, as well as representatives of various religions and foreign royalty.
