Mavro Naoussis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mavro Naoussis ( Greek Μαύρο Νάουσσις , pronunciation : [ ˈmavrɔ ˈnausis ] ( n. Sg. )) Is an old red wine variety . It is the fourth most widely grown red wine grape in Greece with an area of approximately 2000 hectares . It is particularly widespread throughout northern Greece and apparently comes from Naoussa in Central Macedonia .

The name means the black of Naoussa - “the wine” is grammatically neuter in Greek - and denotes the deep color of the red wines. The synonym Xinomavro ( Greek Ξινόμαυρο , pronunciation : [ ksiˈnɔmavrɔ ] ( n. Sg. )) Means sour black and refers to the comparatively high acidity of the wine , which therefore has a good aging potential. The appellation wines of Naoussa and Rapsani are made from this variety. Blended with the low-acid Negoska is Goumenissa made. In the Amyndeo appellation , it is also used to make sparkling wine . White wines are produced using the Blanc de Noirs method and can be marketed as country wine Florina .

Mavro Naoussis is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
