Mavrovouni ( Greek Μαυροβούνι ( n. Sg. )) Is a village in the municipality of Anatoliki Mani . Mavrovouni is located about 2 km south of the town of Gythio on the Laconic Gulf . It is located at the foot of the dark rock mountain of the same name and has an almost 5 km long beach. The economy of the place is characterized by olive growing, fishing and tourism.

Sports

The beach is known for its length and is popular because of the strong winds that blow daily during the summer season, making the place a popular place for surfing.

natural reserve

Mavrovouni beach is also one of the most important egg-laying sites for loggerhead turtles . The association "Archelon" (Greek ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ) tries to protect the nests.

history

The Mavrovouni hill was inhabited as early as the early Bronze Age. Here was early Helladic pottery found. During the Mycenaean Period ( SH III), seven chamber graves were carved into the rock on the slopes below the summit. To the south of it are the remains of a tholos , an indication of a local prince. The Mycenaean settlement was on a hill 300 meters northeast of the graves.
