The Max-Planck-Gymnasium ( MPG for short ) is one of two state high schools in the city of Nürtingen and was named after the important physicist and Nobel Prize winner Max Planck - as an indication of the more natural science orientation . It is mostly a four-class high school.

The main building has an eventful past. In 1914 it was just finished but not yet occupied when the First World War broke out. A military hospital was therefore set up in the school building. After the end of the war, school operations began in 1919. From 1944 until the end of the war in 1945, the building was used as an auxiliary hospital for the second time, during which time the school was closed. The main building is now a cultural monument.

In 1961, the grammar school was expanded to include a special class extension and a gym. In 2006 there was another expansion to include a music hall and additional classrooms. The school operates a photovoltaic system on the roof of the new building , which has a peak output of around 1.95 kilowatts.

Due to its location in the city center, in the immediate vicinity of the train station and bus station, the MPG is very easy to reach for the students.

Profiles

Three profiles are offered at the grammar school. From the 8th grade onwards, the student chooses a scientific, sports or linguistic (with three compulsory foreign languages) profile. Languages offered are: English, Latin or French, Italian.

Special features of the Max Planck Gymnasium

The Max-Planck-Gymnasium introduced the double-hour model in 2006: lessons in the morning are usually given in three double hours (90 minutes), which should enable better concentration and more intensive learning.

Especially for the new pupils of the 5th grade, pupils from higher grades take on a sponsorship in order to make the transition to high school and settling in easier for them.

The students have the opportunity to take part in a student exchange with two schools in Nürtingen's twin town Oullins (France) and / or a school in Maidstone (England).

The MPG has decided against the all-day school model and instead offers homework supervision and subject-specific support on a voluntary basis in the afternoon.

The school's chamber choir is of national importance. In 2001, 2005 and 2009 he successfully took part in the regional and state choir competition and came in second. At the Baden-Wuerttemberg School Choir Festival in 2006 he also won 2nd place and in 2009 1st place in the choir competition "Choir Prize German Language". At the international choir competition in Bad Ischl in 2009, he took 2nd place and received a silver diploma.
