Max Duttenhofer (born May 20, 1843 in Rottweil ; † August 14, 1903 in Tübingen ; full name: Max Wilhelm Heinrich Duttenhofer , since 1896: Max von Duttenhofer ) was a German entrepreneur and industrialist . He made a name for himself with the invention of the smokeless gunpowder and was sometimes referred to as the "Krupp of Southern Germany".

Life

In 1863, Max Duttenhofer took over a centuries- old powder mill from his father, from which the Rottweil powder factory emerged . In 1884 he achieved the big breakthrough and at the same time a sensational development in the field of weapon technology: the low-smoke gunpowder. This invention from Rottweil became an international sales success. After the death of Duttenhofer, the company continued to grow and reached its peak in the First World War with over 2000 employees at times.

He was also one of the three main shareholders and chairman of the supervisory board of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft . Duttenhofer was a member of the board of the Pan-German Association . In addition, in 1898 he suggested the establishment of the Central Office for Scientific and Technical Investigations as a research facility for German armaments companies. From 1876 to 1902 he was chairman of the Rottweil Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

Max von Duttenhofer was a member of the Corps Teutonia Stuttgart . In 1896 he was honored with the royal Württemberg personal nobility .

Former company site

The partial impressive buildings in Rottweiler Neckar Valley are available as Ensemble listed as used by companies and individuals today. The former power plant of the Rottweil powder factory , which was completed in 1916 and planned by the architect Paul Bonatz , was expanded into an event location in the late 1990s.
