Max Mendheim

Friedrich Albert Max Mendheim (born January 11, 1862 in Leipzig ; † August 16, 1939 there ) was a German writer, editor, poet and critic.

Life

Max Mendheim attended secondary school in his hometown until 1879 and, out of consideration for the family, decided first to become a bookseller . He gave up this profession in 1883 and switched to the upper prima of the Realgymnasium in Borna in 1884, where he passed the matriculation examination at Easter 1885 . He then studied German, modern history and philosophy in Leipzig and Munich . In 1889 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. Title of the doctoral thesis: The imperial city, especially Nuremberg mercenaries in the 14th and 15th centuries .

Since 1891 Mendheim was editor of the Brockhausschen Konversationslexikons , employee of the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and the Illustrirten Zeitung . In addition to poems and stories, he also wrote biographies such as those of Emanuel Geibel , Ludwig Uhland and Wilhelm Hauff . He was the editor of numerous poetic and historical works, among others by Johannes Scherr , Gustav Schwab , Joseph Victor von Scheffel and Ferdinand Freiligrath .

Max Mendheim had been married to Anna Klauß since 1891 and had two daughters (Hildegard * 1892, Dora * 1900) and a son (Rudolf * 1895). He was a member of the Leipzig artists and scholars' association The Leonids .
