from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Niehaus (born December 17, 1888 in Wesel ; † April 8, 1981 in Munich ) was a German writer, dance researcher and ballet journalist.

Life

Max Niehaus, who was a full-time state official in Wiesbaden , was considered one of the leading representatives of objective modern dance literature. He was also an employee at the Goethe Institute , where he was responsible for German ballet guest performances abroad. The international contacts gave him a comprehensive view of the dance scene and also shaped his publications. These dealt with both German dancers such as Heinz Bosl and international dance professionals such as Isadora Duncan and Vaslav Nijinsky . His friendship with Sergei Diaghilew and the Ballets Russes as well as with numerous German and American artists enabled him to conduct intensive research. He received professional international recognition through the establishment of ballet photo exhibitions in New York , Brussels , Naples and Munich . The specialty of the photos was that no posed positions were shown, but snapshots of the performance process were taken. Since 1958, Niehaus has also published an annual ballet calendar. - His estate is in the German Dance Archive in Cologne .
