Max Wilhelm Pfänder (born September 21, 1900 in Reichenbach near Meißen , † May 1969 in Cruïlles in Spain ) was a German and Swiss sculptor and draftsman

Life

During his childhood in 1910 the family moved to Mengen in Baden-Württemberg for professional reasons . In 1907 the family changed their place of residence and moved to St. Gallen in Switzerland . There he completed an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor with the sculptor Wilhelm Meier . After completing his apprenticeship, he studied from 1924 to 1929 at the Saxon Royal Art Academy. He was a master student with Karl Albiker and from 1926 to 1929 with Georg Wrba . From 1925 to 1929 he worked for the Zwingerbauhütte and was actively involved in the comprehensive restoration of the Dresden Zwinger under Georg Wrba and Alexander Höfer under the direction of Hubert Georg Ermisch .

In the autumn of 1929 he moved back to St. Gallen. Study trips to Paris followed in 1931 and 1933, where he met the artists Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin , among others . He created numerous sculptures and, until 1938, mainly tomb art. In 1939 he finally moved to Neuenstadt ( La Neuveville ) and set up his studio, affectionately known as La Combe. Study trips to Italy and Ticino followed in 1947 and 1949 . Since 1951 he has been touring Spain again and again in order to find new thoughts and creative ideas and ideas for his artistic work.

In 1934 he married Helen, née Riedener. With her he had a daughter (Eva) and three sons (Rudolf, Klaus and Hermann).

He died in Spain in 1969 while traveling.
