Max Salazar

Max Salazar (born April 17, 1932 in New York City , † September 19, 2010 ibid) was an American journalist, author and musicologist who primarily dealt with Latin music .

The musicologist Salazar specialized in researching the history of Latin American music; He is the author of the book Mambo Kingdom: Latin Music In New York and a variety of articles on musicians such as Tito Puente and 200 other articles on dance that he published in magazines such as the Village Voice , Latin Times , Billboard . Salazar was also an associate editor of Latin Beat Magazine and a contributor to Impacto magazine . He has also taught at UCLA , the Smithsonian Institution, and various colleges.

Salazar , who came from a Puerto Rican family, developed his interest in Latin American music at an early age, as he only turned to this field professionally in the late 1960s, when he started working as a journalist for Latin New York magazine in 1968 . In the following years he deepened his research, interviewed numerous musicians, promoters and figures in the music business who appeared in various magazines. He also invited major musicians of the genre for talks on his weekly radio show, which was broadcast by the New York station WKCR; later he switched to the broadcaster WBAI. He was a personal friend of artists like Machito and Tito Puente, in later years he accompanied the further development of the Latin scene and documented its evolution and experiments with other musical styles.
