Max von Eelking is the son of the officer of the same name, Max Freiherr von Eelking . The father, city commandant in Bremen, came from a patrician family that was ennobled in 1750; the mother came from a middle class family from Coburg . The father had a large fortune, but lost it through speculation , whereupon he left his wife and child. The child stayed with the mother. The ADB author Georg Brückner also described that in addition to her "beautiful figure", her "soft disposition" should have passed on to her son. He lived alone with his mother on the Weißenburg, his parents' house, and his later life was also marked by loneliness and distrust of strangers. This degenerated into a mental illness.

Von Eelking did not see his father again until he was twelve, and his upbringing and training were unregulated. However, he wanted a steady career and attended the forest academy in Drei 30acker . In 1832 he entered the military and rose to major there. Under depression suffering, he devoted himself to the way of painting and collecting Altertums- and military history objects. Promoted to lieutenant colonel , he left the military in 1866. In retirement, he lived with his wife in Meiningen, but the depression did not subside, on the contrary, it intensified. He finally committed suicide on February 7, 1873 , leaving a suicide note.

Von Eelking had written two articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .
