Maxim Wiktorowitsch Surajew ( Russian Максим Викторович Сураев ; born May 24, 1972 in Chelyabinsk , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut .

Surayev completed his pilot training at the University in Kachinsk in 1994 . He then attended a technical academy of the air force in Moscow , which he left in 1998 with the rank of major . Surayev is married and has one child.

In the parliamentary elections in Russia in 2016 , Surayev was elected as a member of the Duma and then left the cosmonaut corps.

Astronaut activity

He was selected as a test cosmonaut on July 28, 1997. By November 1999, he completed his basic training at the Juri Gagarin cosmonaut training center in Star City . In 2008 he was a member of the backup crew for the Soyuz TMA-12 flight . Surajew was also a substitute for Gennady Padalka , who took off in April 2009 with the Soyuz TMA-14 spacecraft and stayed on board the International Space Station for six months as a member of Expeditions 19 and 20 .

ISS expeditions 21 and 22

Surayev started as commander of the Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft on September 30, 2009 for the ISS, where he remained on board as a flight engineer for Expeditions 21 and 22 until March 18, 2010.

ISS expeditions 40 and 41

On May 28, 2014 Surayev took off as commander of the Soyuz TMA-13M spacecraft for his second long-term stay on the ISS. He first worked as a flight engineer for Expedition 40 on the space station. On September 10, 2014, with the decoupling of the Soyuz TMA-12M spacecraft, he took command of Expedition 41 . The return to earth took place on November 10, 2014.

Awards

Usually, every Russian cosmonaut receives the " Hero of the Russian Federation " award after his first flight . Surayev was refused this honor twice, only on December 30, 2010 he was awarded. In March 2016 he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland 4th grade.
