Max von Weyrother (* 1783 ; † November 28, 1833 ) was an Austrian cavalry officer, civil riding instructor at the Military Equitation Institute and from 1813 or 1814 subordinate at the Stadt-Reitschule or "Spanish School" ( Spanish Riding School ) in Vienna , the his brother Gottlieb led as chief rider. When Gottlieb von Weyrother was entrusted with the management of both riding schools in 1816, Maximilian took over the "Spanish Riding School", first as a sub-tutor, and from 1825 as a senior rider. When his brother died, he followed him in all functions.

Even his grandfather Adam Weyrother was chief rider at the riding school. Since he was a contemporary of de la Guérinières , and also stayed in Paris more often , it is assumed that he had direct contact with him.

Maximilian's father, Gottlieb Ritter von Weyrother the elder, was also chief rider and stud inspector at the court of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg before he came to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and worked there in the famous Felsenreitschule . Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart often mentions him and his first wife Eleonore in correspondence with his father Leopold Mozart . Another son of Adam Weyrother was Franz von Weyrother . Gottlieb the Younger (1771-1828) and Maximilian come from Gottlieb the Elder's first and third marriage, so they were half-brothers.

Under Max Ritter von Weyrother, the Spanish Riding School became a Mecca for riders in Central Europe in the 19th century. He coined the term “thinking rider”. He says: “Every rider must be completely clear about the level of dressage at which the horse he is working is, and about the purpose that he wants to pursue from lesson to lesson and ultimately achieve. When asked about the purpose, it must be possible to provide clear and precise information in short words at any time. In a word, the rider does not have to ride alone, but also think, because only a thinking rider will achieve the goal he has set himself in a relatively short time with the greatest possible care for the horse. "

Maximilian Ritter von Weyrother is buried in the Schmelzer Friedhof in Vienna- Fünfhaus . His tombstone is adorned with the family coat of arms given to Adam von Weyrother. This coat of arms also shows a ring which the family inherited as the Weyrother ring and which was finally given to Colonel Podhajsky as a gift in 1973 . Today this ring is in the outfit depot of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Louis Seeger (1794–1865), EF Seidler and Borries von Oeynhausen (1812–1875) were his most famous students. Weyrother's spirit lives on in the thoroughly thought-out and detailed treatise The Dressage of the Raw Horse ... at the riding school of head rider Mathias Niedermeier .
