Maxine Hong Kingston ( Chinese : 湯婷婷, Tāng Tíng Tíng; born October 27, 1940 in Stockton , California) is a Chinese-American writer and professor emeritus (literary scholar) at the University of California, Berkeley .

Life

Kingston is the daughter of Chinese immigrants. Her father, Tom Hong, a scholar, came to the United States in 1924 and ran a laundry there. Her mother, Ying Lan Hong, a midwife, was only able to follow her husband to America in 1939 and worked there as a traditional Chinese healer. Kingston is the third of eight children and the oldest of six born in the United States.

Kingston studied English at Berkeley , earned her bachelor's degree in 1962, and first worked as a high school teacher from 1965 . In 1967 she went to Hawaii and began writing there. In the 1980s, she began teaching writing at UC Berkeley. On March 8, 2003, Kingston was arrested in Washington, DC during a demonstration against the war in Iraq for breaking a police line.

Kingston has been married to actor Earl Kingston since 1962 and has a son with him. She lives in Oakland , California.

Kingston is a major writer in Sino-American literature . Most of her work focuses on the experiences of Chinese immigrants in the United States . With works like The Woman Warrior , in which she deals with questions of sexual and ethnic identity, she has also made contributions to feminism . Kingston's writing is characterized by a synthesis of fictional and non-fictional elements that has been described as creative nonfiction . She has been honored repeatedly with important literary prizes.
