Maria Elisa Capparelli Pinheiro (born September 12, 1952 in São Paulo ), also known under the name May East , is a Brazilian singer and long-time activist for sustainability issues .

Life

May East's musical career began in 1981 with Gang 90 & Absurdettes . In 1984 they released their first single entitled "Índio / Fire in the jungle" and only a few months later their first album, Remota Batucada, followed . In her pieces the traditional Brazilian rhythms playfully combine with elements from rock , electro and new wave . In the following 2 years May East traveled to the most remote corners of Brazil in order to be inspired by the contact with the local population for further musical projects. So the next album was called Tabapora(Published 1987), of the same name as a region in mid-western Brazil . In 1990 the last album for the time being followed, Charites , before she emigrated to England and in 1992 joined the Scottish community of Findhorn . Here she began to deal more deeply with topics of sustainability and to pass on her knowledge in lectures and seminars. She was also able to record further musical successes in the late 1990s, three more albums were created: Cave of the Heart (1998, with the Findhorn Community Chor), Cosmic Breath (2000, with her ex-husband Craig Gibsone) and 1001 Faces ( 2002, solo album).

Activity as an activist

May East played an important role both in building relations between the United Nations and Findhorn Municipality and in building the international NGOs Gaia Education and CIFAL Scotland , which acts as UNITAR's Northern European headquarters . In recent years she has also sponsored various think tanks such as B. The World Wisdom Council , has initiated several transition trainings since 2008 and is involved in an advisory role for sustainable projects in Brazil.

In the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. May East was three times in a row in the list of 100 Global Sustain Ability Leaders of ABC Carbon listed honors which 100 people a year worldwide who have made a name in the field of sustainable development.
