Maylandia chrysomallos ( Syn . : Metriaclima chrysomallos ) is a species of cichlid that occurs endemically in the rocky littoral of Mumbo Island in the Malawian section of the East African Lake Malawi .

features

Maylandia chrysomallos becomes about 9 cm long and has a typical Mbuna shape. Sexually mature males are light blue with six gray transverse bands, a golden sheen on some scales, especially along the sideline . The belly is lighter light blue to green. The head is gray with two light blue ribbons between the eyes, blue cheeks, green gill covers and a gray throat. The dorsal fin is light blue like the back and sides. The transverse stripes extend into the dorsal fin. The rearmost fin membranes of the dorsal fin are colored orange to rust-red on the outside. The anal fin is blue with three to five egg spots. The caudal fin is colored blue-green. The front edge of the pelvic fins is blue, the rest mostly colorless. The ventral fin hard ray and the first two fin membranes can also be black. Females are light green beige and also show the six gray transverse bands and the golden sheen on some scales and along the side line. Her head is gray with two light blue ribbons between her eyes, green gill covers and cheeks, and a white throat. The light blue basic color and the golden shimmer differentiate the type of Maylandia zebra from the same distribution area.

The jaws have two to three rows of teeth. The teeth of the outermost row of teeth are usually two-pointed, some at the back are single-pointed. The teeth of the inner rows of teeth are three-pointed. On the first gill arch there are 11 to 14 gill rakes on the ceratobranchial, 2 to 3 on the epibranchial and one between these gill arch elements.

Like almost all Malawi cichlids and all mbuna, Maylandia chrysomallos is a mouthbrooder .
