Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) ( Marathi मझगांव डॉक शिपबिल्डर्स लिमिटेड ) is a leading shipyard in India . It is based in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra .

history

The first shipyard at this location was founded in the 18th century. The owners changed over time, including the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and the British India Steam Navigation Company . In 1934 the company was registered as a corporation under the name Mazagon Dock Limited . To improve independence from foreign arms companies, the shipyard was nationalized in 1960 and converted into a public company of the Indian government. Since the previous company name did not adequately describe the core of the company, the shipyard was renamed Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in 2015 .

shipbuilding

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited specializes in building warships and submarines for the Indian Navy . In addition, merchant ships and work ships up to 30,000 dwt are built. The shipyard has its own design department, three slipways , four dry docks and an equipment port.
