The Delhi- class ( Project 15 ) is a series of three destroyers built for the Indian Navy .

history

The planning for Project 15 goes back to 1977. It was to be an improved variant of the Godavari- class and construction of these frigates was to begin in 1982 at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai . After the Falklands War , however, the naval staff made further demands and the Russian design office Severnoye Design Bureau was called in as a consultant. The modified 1985 design was larger and had improved capabilities. It combined Russian and Western technology and was influenced by the Rajput class , the Sowremenny class, and the Godavari class. Construction of the first ship began in November 1987 and the three frigates were to be delivered between 1992 and 1996.

Due to ongoing change requests from the Navy, large sections had to be revised again and again. In addition to an increase in costs of 142 percent, this also delayed the entire project and classified it as a destroyer. On May 16, 1996, a fire broke out on the first ship. The repairs created additional costs and delays. A second fire on October 10, 1996 had no further effect. With the aim of strengthening domestic warship construction and becoming more independent, however, all the difficulties were accepted. On November 15, 1997, the first self-built Indian destroyer, the INS Delhi , was put into service.

Furnishing

The 6,900  ts large destroyers are powered by two Ukrainian M36E gas turbine sets that act on two propellers . With an output of more than 60,000 hp, a speed of 32  knots is achieved.

Two quad launchers for 3M24 anti-ship missiles

The armament consists of modern anti-ship missiles , anti-aircraft missiles , guns , torpedoes , depth charges and decoys .

The ships are equipped with appropriate radar devices for air and sea surveillance and with two sonars for submarine hunting . They also have an adequate number of fire control systems and electronic warfare equipment .

The Delhi- class destroyers are the first Indian warships with a double hangar for two on- board helicopters . Are used Sea King Mk.42B and HAL Dhruv . All three units can also be used as a flagship and are set up accordingly.
