Mazin Shooni ( Arabic مازن شوني, DMG Māzin Šūnī ; Born August 25, 1961 in Baghdad , Iraq ) is an American carom player of Iraqi descent in the three - cushion discipline . His beginnings were in pool and snooker , which he still plays today.

Career

Shooni came to the United States at a young age and lived in Detroit. He started skipping school to hang out at the local pool hall. He watched pool pros Alan Hopkins, Corn Breadred, Jay Swanson and Steve Mizzrek play in Detroit to learn from them. When he saw George Ashby and Bob Ameen play three cushion, he was thrilled. Shooni started playing, traveling to tournaments, and then one day met Sang Chun Lee in Chicago. Lee took Shooni under his wing and helped him tweak his game to take it to the next level. Lee was the best mentor an aspiring billiards player could hope for, and he won many tournaments across the country, but the national championship title proved difficult to attain, often finishing second or third in Lee's 12 year winning streak. In 2006 finally came the title win against the serial winner Pedro Piedrabuena with the tournament record of 18 in the highest series (HS), a record that has not been broken until now, but was set by Piedrabuena in 2019 (as of Oct. 2019) . At the three-cushion World Cup in 2007 he represented the USA together with Piedrabuena, but both did not get beyond the qualifying round. In 2012 he won the Pan American Team Championship in Colombia .

Shooni has been a board member of the United States Billiard Association (USBA) for 30 years and became its president in 2016. His focus is on promoting the sports of pool and three-cushion billiards. He runs his own billiard room in Malden , Massachusetts , called "Amazin 'Billiards", which also houses the BCA league.
