The media industry explains how competition and markets arise from, for and through the media ( media economy ). Media economics is a special business lesson which, in addition to the general business fundamentals, also includes topics specifically geared towards the media industry, cf. also media management .

Media Management is a course of study that z. B. at the University of Applied Sciences Wiesbaden , the Stuttgart Media University , the Technical University of Ilmenau , the University of Bayreuth , the University of Applied Sciences Wilhelmshaven / Oldenburg / Elsfleth , the DHBW Ravensburg , the private University of Fresenius as well as the private Rheinische Fachhochschule Cologne and the private University of Applied Sciences of Mittelstands Bielefeld with the degrees Bachelor and Master is offered. This is very similar to the media management course, which is more widespread in Germany, and is intended to convey both business and media-technical content to the students.

Course content

Media economics is largely a business administration degree. The special feature of this course is the imparting of knowledge, skills and practical skills in the fields of economics and law, media technology and media studies . This interdisciplinary approach is intended to enable the graduates to design and control business processes on their own responsibility and in interdisciplinary cooperation with business economists, media technologists, media scientists and partners from other disciplines, taking particular account of media-specific issues.

As part of the bachelor's degree, basic specialist knowledge is imparted. In the higher semesters, introductory courses in specialist subjects, in particular business administration, are offered. A specialization according to personal interests takes place in the main course of the bachelor's degree and in the master’s degree, which is open to holders of a first professional university degree (bachelor, diploma). With a view to the internationalization of studies and the world of work, the improvement of foreign language skills is part of the course. A stay abroad at a university or as part of the internship is recommended.

A master’s degree in “ Media Culture and Media Management ” started at the University of Bayreuth in the 2009 summer semester . This is an interdisciplinary course in which media, history, law, economics and information science are combined. The doctoral program of the same name will also start in the summer semester 2010. The master’s and doctoral students receive well-founded, research-oriented training. In the course of their studies they will acquire a wide range of skills in different areas of the media world. They open up numerous career opportunities in science and practice. The current and future development and application of new media such as the Internet and mobile TV are key research areas. International visiting scholars and experienced practitioners complete the new course.
