Medlar (born: Ned Pegler * 1985 or 1986 in Somerset ) is a Deep House - music producer and DJ , in South London lives and on the London label since 2011 Wolf Music published. His first publications (from 2010) took place under the pseudonym Klic on his own label Hit and Hope .

Medlar describes Chicago house , Detroit techno , disco and hip-hop as influences that have shaped the style .

His most famous publications include: a. “Terrell” (2011), “Floor” (2011) and “Can't Stop” (2012), which found international distribution and radio airplay in the (house) club scene.

Life

Medlar became aware of electronic dance music through Jungle and The Prodigy 's first album Experience and began to be interested in music production on computers from around 2001, at the age of 16 . He also began to be interested in DJing and from 2002 began collecting records and playing them at private parties.

When he was 18 or 19 he moved to Brighton , where he and friends founded a collective for music and (video) art. However, the focus quickly shifted to the production of music and the efforts to publish it. This eventually resulted in her own label, Hit and Hope . In Brighton, Medlar (then still known as Klic ) was able to get regular employment as a DJ in pubs and smaller clubs for the first time.

During a one-year internship at the Brighton house label Mr. Bongo Records , he was confronted with a variety of house music for the first time. He saw it as a "refreshing alternative" to the then predominant British electronic dance music scene, which he oriented himself towards as a DJ for years, and began to experiment with it.

Greymatter and Matt Wolf also worked in the same office, so a contact was made when, shortly after completing his internship, he produced the track "Terrell", which was eventually released on Wolf Music . Several collaborations with Greymatter appeared on the Wolf Music EPs.

His EPs also contain remixes by Detroit Swindle ( Knockard Pearl , 2012) and Soulphiction ( Walk , 2015). In return, he published remixes by other artists on their labels. For example, a remix of the track “The Power” on the EP of the same name, released by WotNot Music (2013) by Glenn Astro .

In 2015 his first album was released, also on Wolf Music, under the title Sleep .

Style and production method

A Roland "Juno-60"

In the first few years he mainly occupied himself with drum and bass , whereby Caliber "inspired" him in the long term. Other influences at this time were Breakage and Photek .

Medlar produced his tracks almost entirely with music programs on the computer, except for the Juno-60 - synthesizer and the (1972 developed) RE-201 ( "Space Echo") of the manufacturer Roland . In 2013 he also began experiments with live recordings with a Roland MIDI sequencer.

In his years as a DJ, Medlar tried out how combining his different influences in front of an audience can "work" in the best possible way and how multi-faceted DJ sets that last for hours can be set up and "staged". The story of the origins and success of Dubstep has "proven to him and many others of my generation that techno can be combined with dub and garage ". Dubstep was also the connecting element between drum and bass and house for him. Since then, there have been fewer and fewer boundaries between the music genres and a more open-minded club audience enables ever greater combination possibilities as a DJ.

His debut album “Sleep” also shows a lot of jazz influences. Also Soul -Vocal- samples found style icon in many of his productions.
