Mednafen (previously known as Nintencer ) is a free emulator of various game consoles . It has many advanced features and uses OpenGL and SDL , among others . Mednafen is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License . Mednafen is an acronym for "My Emulator Doesn't Need A Frickin 'Excellent Name" (freely translated: My emulator doesn't need an oh-so-great name).
The emulator can be run on Windows , Linux , PlayStation 3 , and RISC OS . An implementation for the Wii is currently under development.
Mednafen makes it possible to assign the control keys and the emulated input devices of a keyboard or a joystick as desired and even at the same time. In addition, savestates can be created and the game can be " rewound " in real time. Screenshots can be saved in PNG format at the touch of a button . The Mednafen server makes it possible to play NES , PC Engine and SuperGrafx games with other players over a computer network .
Since Mednafen does not have any separate configuration tools, changes to settings must be made via command line parameters or during the game via an OSD . A graphical user interface (GUI) is being developed in parallel.
Emulated systems
Mednafen is currently emulating the game consoles Nintendo Entertainment System , PC Engine , SuperGrafx , Game Boy , Game Boy Color , Game Boy Advance , Neo Geo Pocket , Neo Geo Pocket Color , WonderSwan , WonderSwan Color and Atari Lynx . From version 0.6.0 a PC-FX emulation is also in development, which is currently only of limited use.
