Megalonotus dilatatus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs are 5.4 to 7.1 millimeters long, making them the largest representatives of their genus in Central Europe. Like all representatives of the genus, they have a darkly colored pronotum, especially roughly dotted at the back . The thighs ( femora ) of the front legs have one long and several small teeth. One can distinguish Megalonotus dilatatus from the similar species Megalonotus chiagra by the lack of long, upright hairs on the pronotum. In addition, it is on average slightly larger than the similar species. The rails ( tibia ) and antennae are always completely black. Often fully winged (macroptere) individuals can be observed.
distribution and habitat
The species is common in Europe, with the exception of the north. In the east the distribution area extends to Russia and via Asia Minor to the Caucasus. The species is widespread in Germany, but rare everywhere; in the north less often than in the south. In Austria it occurs only in the east and south. Although rare in Great Britain, it is common in the south. Open habitats are populated with sand or limestone soil.
Way of life
The animals are bound to legumes (Fabaceae). In Central Europe they are found mainly in the litter under broom broom ( Cytisus scoparius ), less often under broom ( Genista ). The adults and nymphs suckle seeds that have fallen on the ground.
