Megamalai or Meghamalai ( Tamil நங்கவள்ளி ) is a mountain town with about 9,000 inhabitants in the Theni district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . During the British colonial times the place was a hill station .
Location and climate
Megamalai is located in the hinterland of Tamil Nadu in the High Wavy Hills belonging to the Western Ghats at an altitude of approx. 1200 m near the border with the state of Kerala . The metropolis of Madurai is good 110 km (route) from the northeast. The climate is tropical and warm; Rain (approx. 1150 mm / year) falls mainly in the summer monsoon season .
population
Almost all of the town's residents are Hindus . The male population is about 8% higher than the female. Approx. 40% of the population are illiterate. Most of the residents speak Tamil as their mother tongue.
economy
Agriculture used to be the livelihood of the self-sufficient population. Today most groceries can be bought in the market or from street vendors. Recreational tourism now plays a major role in the income of the local population.
history
The older and medieval history of the place is largely in the dark; it was probably not created until the 18th or 19th century. During this time, the British founded a hill station with an attached sanatorium to provide health care for officers and senior civil servants.
Attractions
Megamalai does not have any historically or culturally significant sights. In terms of landscape, botanical and zoological aspects, the area, which is far away from human influence, has a lot to offer, as wild elephants , leopards , tigers , Gaure , water buffalos , monkeys, etc; and birding (bird watching) is possible.
