Mehmet Nazif Gerçin (born February 2, 1901 in Istanbul , † April 2, 1982 there ) was a Turkish football player . Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as its own generation, he is associated with this association. He was a member of the Galatasaray team that dominated Turkish football in the 1920s and won five of eight possible Istanbul championships .

Player career

Gerçin is carried off the field after Zeki Rıza Sporel's broken leg in the derby between Fenerbahçe-Galatasaray on May 10, 1929.

society

Gerçin attended the renowned Galatasaray high school and played here in the youth department of the traditional Galatasaray Istanbul club - the club that was founded by students from the Galatasaray high school. Word of his footballing talent quickly got around in the Galatasaray community, so that he was accepted into the squad of the Galatasaray Istanbul football team at the age of 20 in the 1921/22 season. At the time of his entry into the professional squad, Istanbul was occupied due to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I (see occupation of Istanbul ). After the Turkish teams no longer played a large part of this line-up, the İstanbul Cuma Ligi (German Friday League), the most prestigious league in the country at the time, was resumed in the 1920/21 season . Gerçin immediately conquered a regular place and completed all of his team's league games. With this he finished the season as a champion and secured the club the second title in this competition. In the following season Gerçins team missed the title defense and finished the league as third in the table. Gerçin only played two league games this season.

With the end of the occupation of Istanbul and the establishment of modern Turkey, football was also reformed in Istanbul. After several Istanbul leagues such as the Friday League and Sunday League existed in parallel in some seasons and competed with one another, the Istanbul Futbol Ligi (German Istanbul Football League ) was introduced in the summer . This league replaced or united all previous Istanbul leagues and ensured that all known Istanbul clubs played in the same league. Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. Gerçin missed the championship against arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul in the first season of this newly formed league . In the second season, the 1924/25 season , Gerçin and his team were Istanbul champions. Until the summer of 1929 Gerçin played almost continuously as a regular player and won the Istanbul championship three consecutive times with his club. Gerçin's career took a dramatic turn in the intercontinental derby on May 10, 1929 against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In this game that was decisive for the championship, both teams played a hard-fought and emotionally charged game. The game had to be interrupted several times due to scuffle and injuries. In this encounter Gerçin broke his leg in a duel with Zeki Rıza Sporel . Gerçin never recovered from this serious injury and never returned to the team.

National team

Gerçin began his national team career in 1924 with a commitment for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the national team of the USSR . By May 1926, he completed four more international matches.

Gerçin died on April 2, 1982 in Istanbul . He was buried in the famous Zincirlikuyu cemetery a day later after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Şişli Mosque .
