Mehriban Arif Qizi Əliyeva ( Azerbaijani-Cyrillic Меһрибан Ариф гызы Әлијева Mehriban Arif qyzy Älijewa * 26. August 1964 in Baku , Azerbaijan SSR ) is an Azerbaijani politician and First Lady of the Republic of Azerbaijan (wife of President Ilham Aliyev ). She has been Vice President of Azerbaijan since February 21, 2017 .

Life

Aliyeva, nee Paşayeva, is the granddaughter of the writer Mir Cəlal Paşayev. Her mother is the philologist Aida İmanquliyeva. She and her husband have three children, Leyla , Arzu and Heydar.

In 1982 she started studying at the  Azerbaijan Medical University “N. Narimanov ” . In 2005, Mehriban Aliyeva earned a Ph.D. in philosophy .

In the 2005 parliamentary elections, she was elected to the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. She was a member of parliament until she was appointed Vice-President. Wikileaks announced in- house communications from the US Embassy that Əliyeva had undergone a number of cosmetic operations. The same sources made public the assessment of US diplomats that Aliyeva, despite her membership in parliament at the time, had little political expertise (“poorly informed about political issues”).

She is the chairwoman of the board of the Haydar Aliyev Foundation , the Foundation of Friends of Azerbaijani Culture and President of the Azerbaijani Gymnastics Federation. In 2004, Alieva was awarded the title of Goodwill Ambassador by UNESCO . She is also UNESCO's special ambassador for singing and music traditions. On November 24, 2006, she was appointed ISESCO's Goodwill Ambassador .

Aliyeva has been a member of the New Azerbaijan Party Executive Committee since 2004, and has been the party's deputy chairman since 2013.

While Pope Francis was visiting Azerbaijan in October 2016, Mehriban Alieva and Ilham Aliev met with him. They discussed the guarantee of religious freedom in Azerbaijan.

In February 2017 Aliyeva visited Germany as part of the Munich Security Conference and took part in a discussion on the topic of Boundless Crises, Reckless Disturbers, Helpless Guardians . On June 2, 2017, Aliyeva was elected honorary member of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan . As Vice President, Aliyeva made her first trip abroad to France .

Awards

  • In 2016 she was awarded the EOC Order of Merit by the EOC (European Olympic Committees) .
