Prussian all-mile obelisk in Burg

The milestone in Burg is a replica of a Prussian milestone in the town of Burg in the Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

At the market of Burg, an intersection of the streets Breiter Weg , Deichstraße and Zerbster Straße , on a roundabout .

History and shape

A number of Prussian milestones have been preserved along Bundesstrasse 1 between Burg and Genthin . Several streets in Burg are named after the historic Prussian Staatschaussee , to which these milestones belonged, namely Magdeburger Chaussee , Magdeburger Strasse , Berliner Strasse and Berliner Chaussee . Along such roads , stones were set up at regular intervals of 1,883 meters to indicate that a quarter of a mile had been covered. At every full Prussian mile an obelisk was set up, which marked a whole mile and bore inscriptions that indicated the distance to Berlin and the nearest cities - such as the milestone (Reesen) .

The road between Magdeburg and Berlin was expanded between 1810 and 1823. In the course of the change from the mile to the kilometer as the new measure of length, the stones were changed to 10-kilometer intervals around 1875.

The Stein in Burg is neither at such a myriameter distance from Magdeburg, nor does its distance fit in any way to the Stein near Reesen, which is 30 kilometers from Magdeburg. Rather, it is a gemstone. In its present form, the almost four meter high sandstone obelisk is primarily a signpost that was erected in 1999 as part of the renovation of the market square to enrich the cityscape. Historically, there has never been a Prussian full-mile obelisk in Burg, so that the choice of kilometers is only logical. In 2012 it was cleaned of graffiti and given a protective layer so that it can be cleaned more easily in the future.

Inscriptions

The south side has an arrow pointing to the right (east) and indicates Dessau 52 km and Zerbst 37 km . The arrow pointing to the left (north) on the west side is provided with the indication Berlin 110 km , the arrow there pointing to the right (south) with Magdeburg 22 km . This also applies to the opposite sides, although the Magdeburg information is missing on the east side.
