The Duddell Street ( Sino 都爹利街 , Pinyin Dūdiēlì Jie , Jyutping Dou 1 de 1 lei 6 Gaai 1 ) is a street in Central , the central district of Hong Kong . It connects Queen's Road Central in the north with Ice House Street in the south. It is named after George Duddell (1821–1887), an auctioneer and landowner.
Origin of name
The 150 meter long Duddell Street is named after George and his brother Frederick Duddell. The Duddell brothers, especially George Duddell, the auctioneer, were large landowners in the area around Duddell Street , who emigrated from Macau to Hong Kong or settled on the island after the British annexation of Hong Kong in 1841 . The graves of Frederick Duddell and his wife are in the old Protestant cemetery in Macau .
Staircase and gas lamps
At the southern end of the street, a set of stairs leads to Ice House Street. It has been protected as a cultural monument of Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps since 1979 . It consists of 56 granite steps and two landings . In total, the three parts of the staircase are about 18 meters long. It is not clear when the staircase was built, but after analyzing maps it is assumed that it was built between 1875 and 1889. A renovation of the stairs is documented as early as 1883.
At the lower and upper ends of the balustrade there are a total of four gas lamps, which are also part of the cultural monument. It is about 2.5 meters high and equipped with two lights Rochester lamps ( Two-light Rochester Model ) from the company William Sugg and Co. (now Sugg Lighting ). The lamps operated by Hong Kong and China Gas were initially operated manually and now turn on and off automatically between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Since 1967, the four lamps on Duddell Street have been Hong Kong's only gas-powered street lamps . In 1984 the administration had to reorder some parts of the gas lamps (lampshades, etc.) in Great Britain in order to be able to replace them. The staircase is a popular setting for tourists, wedding couples as well as for films and series from Hong Kong . The evening romantic atmosphere under the last gas lamps in Hong Kong is a popular meeting place for couples in love and strollers in the area.
In September 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut caused major damage to the facility. Three of the four gas lamps and parts of the banisters were destroyed by falling trees. Not all damage had been repaired by November 2019.
Other buildings
Most of the buildings on Duddell Street are now primarily used as commercial and office space. The Hong Kong Diamond Exchange was located in the Hong Kong Diamond Exchange Building (8-10 Duddell Street). The luxury fashion brand Shanghai Tang opened a flagship store on Duddell Street in 2012 . Starbucks operates a café in Baskerville House (13 Duddell Street), the design of which is based on the style of the classic bing sutt cafés ( Cantonese 冰 室 ) 2 of the 1950s and 1960s in Hong Kong.
