Season overview:
Pacific typhoon season 2018

Mangkhut or Ompong was an active typhoon over the Pacific Ocean . It was temporarily classified in the fifth and highest category on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale and had a diameter of about 900 km.

On September 14, 2018, he was over the Pacific Ocean and set course for the north of the Philippines . The wind speeds were up to 255 km / h and were thus significantly higher than that of Hurricane Florence, which was ruling parallel in the Atlantic . It was expected that gusts with a top speed of up to 330 km / h could occur. This would correspond to Typhoon Haiyan , which claimed over 6300 lives in 2013.

It was expected that the typhoon would trigger a large tidal wave and bring with it enormous amounts of rain that lead to floods and landslides . The Philippine Civil Protection Agency assumed around 5 million people at risk; As of September 14, around 800,000 had been requested to evacuate. In addition, flights were canceled in advance and ship connections discontinued. A total of around 10 million people live in the endangered area.

First damage in Shenzhen

In the early morning of September 15, the storm hit land in the Philippine community of Baggao . According to initial information, several people died as a result of the typhoon, and the power went out over a large area. Contact with several regions was broken. Meteorologists now assumed that the typhoon would move on to China and hit mainland China as a category 4 cyclone in the area of the densely populated Pearl River Delta . Warnings were also issued there and evacuations were initiated in particularly endangered regions. Hong Kong authorities warned the population should "prepare for the worst". On the evening of September 16, local time (UTC + 8) , the first foothills of the typhoon reached Hong Kong. In the forecast, there were gusts of wind of over 200 km / h on the coast of Guangdong Province. After reaching the coast at Jiangmen / Yangjiang during the night, heavier rain was also expected in North Vietnam.

The blocked Yee Wo Street in Causeway Bay , Hong Kong

600 streets were blocked in Hong Kong. Little information was available from southern China as independent reporters and journalists in mainland China rarely report; some mainstream media believed that free journalism was extremely difficult there. According to official information, four people died in China. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge , which was not yet opened at the time, survived this stress test. The cyclone had partly reached wind speeds of 55 m / s and moved to the mainland near Jiangmen . In the hinterland ( Yangchun ) there was considerable flooding as a result of the heavy rains.

As of September 22, 2018, at least 127 deaths were known in the Philippines, according to official information. In addition, at least 111 people were missing, for whom there was little chance of survival. In addition to thousands of buildings destroyed and large-scale power outages, there were also many injured. In Hong Kong alone, more than 200 people were injured.
