background

This series is based on the novel "Gentle Ben" by the children's book author Walt Morey from 1965. My friend Ben is about the friendship between seven year old Mark Wedloe and his black bear Ben in the Florida Everglades. Mark's parents are the gamekeeper Tom and his wife Ellen. Family friends are Spencer and Willie.

The main roles were Clint Howard (brother of director Ron Howard ) and Dennis Weaver (known from Smoking Colts ). Ben was played by the bear Bruno, whose coach was Monty Cox .

The German dubbed version was created under the direction of Joachim Brinkmann .

In 1967 a feature film was made with Vera Miles as Ellen Wedloe and in 2002 another television film with new, unknown actors.
