Master of the Hasenburg Missal
The master of the Hasenburg missal is a South Bohemian illuminator who painted the missal of Prague Archbishop Zbynko Zajíc von Hasenburg , which was completed around 1409 . In addition to many ornate initials with miniature depictions of the Christian history of salvation , the artist who is not known by name has created a full-page illustration, the canon image. It represents the crucifixion of Christ. The Hasenburg missal is now in the Austrian National Library in Vienna (Cod. 1844).
The master of the Hasenburg missal is one of the most outstanding representatives of Gothic book illumination in Bohemia. There their artistic development had reached an artistic climax through the support of Emperor Charles IV and his son Wenzel at the time of the master. The painting style in the Hasenburg missal represents the top form of the so-called soft style in the region. It is closely related to the style of the Simson master , one of the painters from the Wenceslas workshop in Prague.
The master of the Hasenburg Missal is also credited with decorating two manuscripts that are now in the Christian Weise Library in Zittau (AI, A VI). These are a Vesperale and a Matutinale from around 1420, liturgical books created for the Augustinian Canons of Karlshof in Prague. In addition, the book decoration of the so-called Korczek Bible , the text of which was completed in 1400 and both parts of which are now preserved in the Austrian National Library (Cod. 1169) and in the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe (Cod. St. Blasien 2), is said to be from the same Masters originate.
