Master of the Irrsdorfer Altar Wings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of the Irrsdorfer Altarflügel , also called Master von Irrsdorf (* around 1480; active until around 1530) was a German carver. Since his name remains unknown, he is given an emergency name after one of his works.

Life

The master of Irrsdorf got his emergency name after four reliefs that have been preserved in the branch church Maria Himmelfahrt in Irrsdorf . His possible identity with the monogrammist IP has been discussed many times.

A collaboration with the painter Wolf Huber in Passau can be proven for the master von Irrsdorf . He transferred Huber's wrinkled robe style into relief, so that his reliefs and the painted panels convey a uniform overall impression.

Works by Wolf Huber , Albrecht Dürer and Andrea Mantegna can be identified as graphic templates for his carvings .

The master of Irrsdorf had his workshop in Passau and worked on some orders with the painter Wolf Huber or worked temporarily under his direction.

Appreciation

The master from Irrsdorf is about the same age as Wolf Huber, if not a little older. The master of Irrsdorf is still committed to the late Gothic. In doing so, he creates a space of depth in his reliefs, uses the standing motif of counter post and creates the landscape background. Once successful, he likes to repeat motifs within the composition.
