Irrsdorf is a village in Flachgau in the state of Salzburg on the Upper Austrian border as well as a locality and cadastral municipality of the municipality of Straßwalchen in the Salzburg-Umgebung district .

geography

The place is located 25 kilometers northeast of Salzburg and a good 4½ kilometers northeast of Neumarkt am Wallersee .

Place and village Irrsdorf

Irrsdorf is located on Mondsee Straße  (B154) 2 kilometers south-east of the community capital Straßwalchen , in the valley of the Irrsdorfer Bach (Mühlbach) . This tributary of the Mattig comes from the Schoibernberg southeast, and forms the pass landscape near Oberhofen am Irrsee (Zellersee) , which connects the Mattig valley with the Mondseeland , and thus the catchment areas of the Inn and the Traun . The Irrsdorfer Bach flows on the northwestern edge of Irrsdorf into the Hainbach (east of eingarten ), which then runs over Straßwalchen to the Schwemmbach . The Irrsberg  ( 884  m above sea level ), the northern foothills of the Kolomansberg massif, rises directly to the south .

The village has a good 140 addresses, Irrsdorf in the center, Irrsdorfer Kirchenstraße and Irrsdorfer Bachstraße . The B154 does not go through the village, which is therefore a quiet area. The location also includes the locations Am Sportplatz (2 addresses) on the other side of the Westbahn , which also only touches the location - somewhat higher up - and the Am Hainbach settlement (40 addresses) on the other side of the B154.

The village of Irrsdorf comprises almost 300 buildings with 1092 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Quengert / Am Irrsberg (40 addresses) on the other side of the western railway and the small hamlet of Rattenberg to the north above the Hainbach settlement also belong to the local area .

Cadastral municipality Irrsdorf

The entire southeastern municipality in the valley between Irrsberg and the high field on Kogler Berg to the east belongs to the much larger cadastral municipality of Irrsdorf with a good 1170  hectares . In addition to the village of Irrsdorf, this also includes perennials and parts of Ruckling to the north (the two places have now largely grown together with Straßwalchen), and the villages of Rattensam , Innerroid and Extraroid to the north-east, Bodenberg , Neuhofen and Stockham to the west, and Taigen to the south.

The cadastral community corresponds to the Straßwalchen-Innen-Ost counting district , to which the village of Pfenninglanden is counted behind Ausserroid.

History and sights

The place is in the run-up to the glacier retreat area of the Irrsegletscher in the penultimate glacial period ( Riss glacial period , around 200,000 years old): Watzlberg - Hochfeld as well as the Ausserroid - Stockham threshold represent its mighty marginal moraines. In the Würm glacial period (100,000 –10,000 years before today) the glacier then no longer got beyond Oberhofen, the place itself lies on the deposits of this more recent time, lined on both sides by the old terraces .

That the valley between Straßwalchen and Irrsee is an old settlement area is proven by prehistoric finds as well as those from Roman times, such as the stone block with equestrian relief in the church and grave finds as well as remains of the Roman road near Pfenninglanden .

The place is one of the oldest settlements at the time of the Baiwar conquest in the area, it is documented as Urisisdorf, Urisesdorf as early as 760 . This name is added to a personal name Uris , which is not of Germanic origin. As with Straßwalchen itself (as -walchen -Ort) there is probably continuity of the pre-settlement. The Irrsee (around 1000 Urisesseo ) is derived from this name, so the settlement was probably the center of extensive holdings as early as the early Middle Ages .

From the beginning of the Duchy of Bavaria, Irrsdorf was one of the four chairpersons of the Hechfeld (Hochfeld) district court . It initially belonged to the Mondsee Monastery and then to the Diocese of Passau . Later, together with Straßwalchen and the Hochfeld court, it was disputed for a long time between the Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg (which has belonged to since 1390), the Duchy of Bavaria and Austria .

Today's Gothic church Maria Himmelfahrt , a branch of Straßwalchen , dates from 1408. It was an important pilgrimage church in the late Middle Ages and was splendidly furnished, with carved doors from the construction period and the altars by Meinrad Guggenbichler in the 1680s. The listed ensemble of the church with its walled cemetery also includes two no wayside shrines ( Mother of Sorrows and Herzog's grave ).

The school was bricked up in the 1840s and had around 200 students, as many as the town had inhabitants at the time. They came together from all of today's cadastral area and from Hüttenedt . With the foundation of the elementary school in Hochfeld in 1893, the school district shrank somewhat.

In 1860 the Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn (Westbahn) was opened here, with the Straßwalchen train station in the neighboring town of Thalham.

From 1873 Irrsdorf was the capital of the community of Straßwalchen-Land . In 1936 the market and rural communities were merged again.

Today the place is known for its lively village life. In 2014, for example, a completely redesigned village square was inaugurated that uses the grounds of the old cheese dairy.

The Arnoweg (stage 59 Irrsdorf - Mattsee ), which you can also walk as a valley variant of the Via Nova , leads through Irrsdorf . It connects important historical places of the Salzburg archdiocese.
