Straßwalchen is a municipality in the north of Salzburg ( Flachgau ) on the border with Upper Austria with 7628 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

The community is located 25 kilometers northeast of Salzburg . It forms a bulge of the Flachgau and is almost completely enclosed by Upper Austria.

It includes the gate landscape on the northern edge of the Alps, which stretches between the Mondsee Flysch Mountains of the Salzkammergut Mountains and the Hausruck and Kobernaußerwald range in the foothills of the Alps to the north , and the Salzburg lake area in the west with the Vöckla-Ager valleys in the east also connects the Mondseeland in the south with the Mattig valley in the north.

The majority of the municipality extends in the catchment area of ​​the Mattig , which goes to the Inn near Braunau , and is a valley that is formed by the Hainbach . The highest elevation in the municipality is 844  m above sea level. A. the Irrsberg in the south, the last branch of the Kolomannsberg . The community extends westwards to the foot of the Tannberg  ( 786  m above sea level ). Between Steindorf and Neumarkt lies the valley watershed to Wallersee , which drains over the Fischach below Salzburg to the Salzach . In the southeast lies the Kogler Berg  ( 819  m above sea level ), a fringe mountain of the group around Mondseeberg and Saurüssel between Mondsee and Attersee . Between Irrsberg and Koglerberg, near Oberhofen, lies the valley watershed, which leads to the Irrsee catchment area , and thus to the Ager zur Traun .

To the north, the community extends to the Krenwald (up to  609  m above sea level ), a foothill of the Kobernaußerwald , which separates the Straßwalchen landscape from that of the upper Schwemmbach . The Lengau valley extends between Krenwald and Tannberg . Between Kogler Berg and Krenwald there is an arched ridge, the Hochfeld (around  620  m above sea level ). Behind it, the municipality extends to the upper Vöckla , another tributary of the Traun, which goes to the Ager at Vöcklabruck . Between the high field near Watzlberg and the Krenwald there is also another stream to Vöckla, the Kirchhamer Bach .

This means that Straßwalchen stretches between four larger river basins, the area of ​​which between Salzburg - Braunau - Vöcklabruck - Unterach am Attersee is about 60 kilometers east-west and north-south. Both axes are also important long-distance connections, namely the one along the edge of the Alps to Vienna, and the one between Germany and the Salzkammergut and further into Styria. That explains the importance of Straßwalchen as a transport hub.

history

The area around Straßwalchen was probably settled as early as the Neolithic Age, as the discovery of a hatchet suggests. Settlement can also be proven on the basis of finds from the Bronze Age and Roman times . In the middle of the 6th century the Bavarians took the land , to whom Straßwalchen probably owes its name. These called Romans or Romanized peoples as Walchen . On April 11, 799 it was first mentioned as strazzuualaha .

In 1243 the rule of Straßwalchen came to the diocese of Passau . In 1286 the toll station in Straßwalchen, which had previously belonged to the Wildenegg rulership , came to the Duchy of Bavaria , which became the cause of many disputes over the centuries. The Archbishopric Salzburg acquired the dominion of Mattsee with Straßwalchen and the Hochfeld court from the Passau bishopric in 1390 . Straßwalchen received in 1462 from Archbishop Burkhard III. Weißpriach of the market rights granted, the neck or criminal court remained in Bavaria. In 1576 the Archbishopric of Salzburg had a high court (gallows) built in Straßwalchen for the first time, and the dispute with Bavaria escalated several times. In 1759, those arrested were even freed from prison by regular Bavarian troops.

With the end of the archbishopric, Straßwalchen came completely under Bavarian rule between 1806 and 1810, then the place with the Salzburger Land finally came to Austria, at that time the Salzach district of Austria ob der Enns . In 1850 the market and rural community of Straßwalchen were amalgamated. With the opening of the Empress Elisabeth Railway in 1860, Straßwalchen was connected to the railway network. In 1914 the market was electrified.

With the construction of the West Autobahn  (A 1) in 1963, the importance of Bundesstraße 1 , which runs through Straßwalchen and was the main connection between Vienna and Salzburg, decreased.

The main town is the market town of Straßwalchen , which is also the locality and cadastral municipality of the municipality.

The place is a good four kilometers northeast of Neumarkt , about in the center of the municipality. He is at around 540  m above sea level. A. Height a little northwest of the Irrsberg . This village of Straßwalchen has around 900 buildings with around 3500 inhabitants.

The slightly larger cadastral community of Straßwalchen Markt with 610  hectares also includes the towns of Latin in the north and of Haidach the houses on the B 147, as well as areas up to the Irrsberg summit.

Statistically, the village is divided into Straßwalchen-Zentrum for the core town (000, within the local area; 2015: 575 inhabitants), and Zentrum-Umgebung-Nord  (003; 2015: 1,179 inhabitants) and Zentrum-Umgebung-Süd  (004; 2015: 1603 inhabitants) for the respective peripheral locations and places belonging to the village. Overall, the village comprises almost half of the community's population.

The crude oil prospecting AG operates in Straßwalchen- Haidach an underground storage which on the Penta West - pipeline to the refinery in Burghausen is connected.

The Lagermax company maintains a very large distribution warehouse for new vehicles here. Despite having its own, well-used siding, a large number of journeys on the road through the town center towards the motorway are necessary.

• Road: Wiener Straße  B 1 Salzburg - Linz - Vienna , Austria's old east-west axis, runs near Straßwalchen . This previously went directly through the town; in 2014, the Straßwalchen bypass was opened, which passes the town to the north and thus relieves traffic. This is around 25,000 vehicles a day and led to regular traffic jams during business hours. Braunauer Straße  B 147 Mattighofen - Braunau , the important Oberinnviertel connection, runs north . It is directly connected to the bypass. The Mondsee Straße  B 154 Zell am Moos - Mondsee - Sankt Gilgen am Wolfgangsee , the route into the Salzkammergut , leads south . It branches off in place.
• Train: Straßwalchen is located on the Westbahn and has two train stations and one train stop. Coming from Salzburg after Steindorf station , the non-electrified, single-track Mattigtalbahn branches off from the Westbahn to Braunau. In the direction of Linz is the Straßwalchen train station in Thalham , which is also the terminus of the S2 of the Salzburg S-Bahn . In the direction of Braunau, the Straßwalchen West stop was opened near the center of Straßwalchen. The stations are stops for all local trains that serve the respective route. Straßwalchen has three elementary schools and one ÖKO secondary school . Salzburg's largest solar collector system is located on the south wall of this secondary school . The old main school building was renovated and since then an upper secondary school has been located in it.
