The Krenwald is a forest area between Straßwalchen , Friedburg and Schneegattern in the Salzburg - Upper Austrian border area.

Location and landscape

The Krenwald is a branch south of the Kobernaußerwald and is separated from the Kobernaußerwald by the valley of the Schwemmbach . The approximately 6 km long ridge extends in a west-east direction from the Mattig valley north of Schneegattern ( Hainbach ) to the saddle at Geretseck  (L1282) and thus represents the western foothills of the Cold Ice  ( 734  m above sea level ). It belongs to the landscape Vöckla-Ager-Hügelland , a spatial unit of the Hausruckviertel (although the municipality of Lengau is still included in the Innviertel ). The main ridge of the Iglesberg - Utzweih - Haselroid ridge is now an open agricultural area, wooded - and called Krenwald - is only the northern flank. The highest point of the Krenwald ridge is Utzweih at approx.  640  m above sea level. A. , so that it rises about 100 meters above the Mattig Valley.

Geology and hydrography

The western part forms the Schwemmbach – Hainbach watershed, the eastern part already Mattig - Vöckla , i.e. Inn to Traun : the Kirchhamer Bach south runs eastwards, the catchment areas are strongly interlocked here by the terminal moraines of the Irrseegletscher , the foreland glacier of the Dachstein glacier . The Krenwald ridge itself is also a terminal moraine, which continues eastwards along the Hausruck- Südfuß, and (interrupted by the Mattig Valley) also forms the northern roof of the Tannberg to the west, and represents the highest level of foreland glaciation in the area. In this way, the Krenwald differs from the main massif of the Hausruck and Kobernaußerwald range and directly forms the geological northern border of the Alps.
